Cold Case: The Cycle Path Rapist

A rapist laughs as justice catches up with him after three decades.

In April 1990 an 18-year-old woman was raped as she walked her dog on a Sunday afternoon along the Honeybourne Line cycle path in Cheltenham, Gloucs.

Police had a description of the attacker, witnesses and a full DNA profile. But he evaded the law for 30 years.

In 2021, 66-year-old Paul Shakespeare was arrested after he was caught carrying a knife in Cumbria. His DNA was taken and it matched the crime scene from decades before.

In this report for ITV News, Gloucestershire Police describe the attack and talk about their forensic work. We also speak with the original lead detective about how he knew the attacker would always be caught.

The victim makes a harrowing impact statement to the court, describing how she has been haunted by the attack.

Shakespeare pleaded guilty to rape and was sentenced to nine years in prison.
